​In 1999 the Pharmacy Partnership, funded by the California Department for Public Heath, created a full page counter ad, which ran in the New York Times .
​
A few years later in 2002, Prescription for Change also funded by the California Department of Public Health, purchased ad space running the same full page ad in the Western Journal of Medicine.
​
In 2008 the California Department of Public Health along with the LGBT Partnership created a counter ad questioning the need for tobacco sales in the pharmacies and utilized buses and flyers.
